Carewatch: How to find a care home that focuses on supporting independence

Often, when the time comes to starts looking for a care home, many people are hesitant because they don't want to give up their independence. Whilst increasing care needs mean it may no longer be possible for people to remain at home, moving into residential care doesn't mean they have to surrender their independence. In fact, one thing many care homes are skilled at is supporting independence.

Life expectancy is increasing and it's important that older people have access to the care they need in order to enjoy their winter years. Age UK has compiled a checklist of factors that should be considered when choosing a care home, so you can enjoy your senior years surrounded by companions and people who provide elderly support.

The first few points cover the location: Can people visit the home easily? Are there good transport links? Are there shops and other facilities, such as parks, pubs and places of worship nearby? The location is important because, in order to maintain your independence, you'll want to be able to leave the home to do things. Supporting independence does not start with you never leaving the home, so make sure you have leisure activities that are easily accessible to you.

Choosing a care homes that's easily accessible will also help maintain a level of independence, because you will be able to move around freely. Is there a lift? Does the home have good wheelchair access? Can you enter and leave the building easily? These are all key questions you should address.

Any care home that prides itself on supporting independence will encourage you to stay active and do as much for yourself as you can. You should be able to make choices about your day, spend time with visitors and prepare food and drink for yourself.

However, you must ensure staff at the home can provide sufficient care that is tailored to your needs. Whilst supporting independence is key, so is the ability to care for you should your needs change.
