A dear friend of mine was not doing so well. She seemed to be getting more and more distant and blue because her health was getting worse. I can understand how she felt her depression came from frustration at being unable to do basic things like run errands or get around the house. If you find yourself in a situation like my friend for whatever reason, whether it's because of your health or your age or your weight, then you need to do what she did. She's happier now than I have seen her in years. It didn't happen overnight, but once she accepted that she had to have a wheelchair, that was the first step (no pun intended). She told me once that she felt like she was succumbing to her illness by caving in and getting a wheelchair. I told her that it wasn't like giving up! And wheelchairs had come a long way in the last 10 years. We went online together to look at the newest developments in wheelchairs, and she started to get really excited about owning one. There was lots mobility wheelchairs to choose from: lightweight travel wheelchairs, wheelchairs with motors, jazzy electric wheelchairs, of which there was a good selection. They didn't look stuffy or old-fashioned at all, and they were very customizable. I could sense her excitement as she found out all of the optional equipment you could get. The Jazzy electric wheel chair was what we finally decided on after looking through all of the power chairs available. She picked out he basket and cupholder as accessories, and also picked out a nice color. Once her chair was delivered, she needed to adjust. Getting to where she could operate it successfully was a little tricky, but she did okay. Operating her Jazzy electric wheelchair now comes completely natural to her. If she hadn't done this, who knows where she'd be now. Her life has improved dramatically with her new found freedom.
